Remember these song lyrics from Grease? Summer is here and that means more time to spend in our gardens. If you still want to add some flowers and plants to your garden, here are some selections that can thrive in the heat of summer and will bloom until the fall.
Dahlias have beautiful blooms and are easy to grow when planted in a moist fertile soil in full sun. They have upright stems that support blooms all summer long.
Otto’s Thrill and Vancouver are Dinner Plate Dahlias. These spectacular Dahlias have large, luscious blooms. Otto’s Thrill is a bright pink and Vancouver is deep pink with white edges.
Another variety of Dahlia is the Semi-Cactus Dahlia. This particular type of Dahlia has “spiny” petals. They are also known as Spider Dahlias. Check out the Friquolet Cactus Dahlia with red flowers tipped with white.
Lilies – Lilies are large prominent flowers that come in a range of colors. They’re easy to grow and make a colorful addition to any garden or landscape.
The Sorbonne Lily is an Oriental lily which has become increasingly popular due to its large exotic blooms and heavy sweet perfume. This lily has slender stalks topped with a cluster of pink flowers.
The Fulva Daylily is also known as a Tiger Lily and has orange flowers.
Begonias are great for pots and hanging baskets. They have bouncy blooms and come in almost every color. They grow best in filtered shade and rich soil and they like to be kept moist. Wildflowers are easy to grow and depending on your climate can be planted in the Spring, Summer and the Fall. Alyssum – Alyssum has tiny delicate flowers that have a sweet, subtle fragrance. They make great container plants and come in Lavender and White.
Coreopsis – Coreopsis have fluffy yellow flowers on top of tall stems. This plant has a long bloom time and is easy to grow.
Calendula – Calendula can be grown in a flower or herb garden as its oil has been used as an anti-inflammatory. In the vegetable garden, calendula draws aphids from valuable plants. It can also be used in stew, broths and salads as it has a similar taste to Saffron.
Black-eyed Susan – This quintessential summer perennial has golden yellow flowers with dark centers on 2 to 4-inch flowers. These flowers are comfortable in a flower border or a wildflower garden.
