I don’t know why but when I think about an orange and white color combination I always think of a creamsicle. For those of you not familiar with a creamsicle it is an ice cream pop that has vanilla ice cream in the middle and orange sherbet on the outside. I have to admit that I really like the colors combined together but I don’t like creamsicles at all! As a neutral color white pretty much works with any other color and the color orange is no exception.
If you stop and think about it the orange and white color combination is probably more common than we realize. These are the school colors for the University of Tennessee and most tabby cats have orange and white fur. It is a pretty popular color combination in sports teams including the Denver Broncos and after the Pantone Institute named “tangerine tango” the hot color for 2012 combining it with the color white became very popular with wedding planners and brides.
I see orange as an energetic color that demands your attention and combining the color white with it has a brightening effect that I think makes the orange color stand out even more. One of my favorite planting combinations involves white dianthus and orange wallflowers. After a long, cold winter this combination just seems to confirm that spring is here to stay! There are many ways you can combine these colors together in your garden and I just want to share a few of this with you.
The dianthus and wallflower combination that I just described involves putting together two different plants but another way to enjoy this combination is mixing these colors from the same plant family. For instance, try combing orange and white zinnias or marigolds to get the same effect. You can also mix plants with different heights such as a tall zinnia and a smaller variety of zinnia like the profusion series. The only limit on combing orange and white is your own imagination!
